Chapter 11

I landed in London feeling both exhilarated and exhausted. As soon as Neale had suggested I make a flying – literally – visit back home, I knew it was the right thing to do.

All my instincts told me that I needed to at least give it a go. I still loved Daniel, and was sure he still loved me. He was my fiancé, the love of my life, and I needed to see him. Anyway, the alternative was too awful to contemplate – spending three days loafing around California feeling sorry for myself. That would be too pathetic for words, even by my standards, and I’ve set some pretty impressive standards when it comes to being pathetic, believe me.

So I’d done the most sensible thing possible – and asked Cooper and Felicia for their help. Also, you know, it seemed only polite to explain to Cooper what I was planning. It was his parade I was running out on, even though I promised him I’d be back in time for the next leg of the tour.

‘I know you will, babe,’ he’d said, holding my hand and squeezing my fingers. ‘I trust you. And I know you need to do this. I really hope it fixes things between you two.’

‘Oh God, me too,’ I’d replied, ecstatic and nervous at the prospect. ‘I’ve just been so . . . I don’t know. Worried. About everything. About the way I’m feeling, and the way he’s feeling, and about Vella, all of it.’

‘I know you have, and this is the right thing to do. But I have to say this, kiddo – I don’t think you need to be worrying about Vella. Daniel would never cheat on you.’

I must have looked less than convinced by this statement, which made me feel ashamed of myself – what had Daniel ever done to deserve my mistrust, this lack of faith? Nothing at all. I was just being rubbish.

‘Of course not,’ I replied, aiming for confident but falling somewhere nearer to desperate.

‘He’d have to be crazy to cheat on someone like you,’ Cooper had said, obviously picking up on my insecurities. ‘You’re beautiful and funny and kind and talented and smart, and I’m sure he knows how lucky he is.’

I nodded my thanks, and was stupidly grateful for his attempt to boost my confidence.

‘You’re just saying that to make sure I don’t jib off the rest of the tour,’ I said, trying to smile my way through it.

‘Nope. I’m saying it because I mean it. Anyway, let’s go see Felicia. If anyone can get you home in a hurry, it’s my Girl Friday.’

And – obviously – he’d been completely right. His Girl Friday was possibly the most awesome woman I’d ever met, I’d decided. Within an hour, she had me packed, booked on a flight, and in a limo to the airport. She’d even arranged for a car to meet me at Heathrow, and managed to lay her hands on a chunk of cash in sterling instead of dollars.
